The Rise of Fascism: Ele Não

The rise of fascism and authoritarianism across the world has generated a global alert and an urgent call for action. Right-wing candidates have appropriated social media platforms to promote their campaigns and attract popular attention. Their messages are simple, straightforward, alarming and aggressive. The format of the digital age has facilitated the dissemination of fake news and made hateful and populist statements very effective. Why is Bolsonaro a menace to human rights? How can we reclaim the use of these platforms and create new strategies to reframe political activism and social movements from an ethical perspective?

The Program

The program “The Rise of Fascism in Brazil: Ele Nao” is constituted by a series of lectures, artistic interventions, workshops and discussions hosted in six different locations across Chicago (DfbrL8r Gallery at Zhou B Art Center, Sullivan Galleries at SAIC, Comfort Station in Logan Square, The University of Chicago, FlatIron Studios at the Robey Hotel and Links Hall) during the last semester of 2018 and the first semester of 2019. The events focus on the discussion on  about the historical sociopolitical context and the recent rise of fascism in Brazil and the importance of developing new strategies for activism to support human rights and aim to create social awareness about the threats to democracy and human rights and the rise of authoritarian and fascist politics in Brazil during the latest elections. The presenters invite the audience to actively engage and participate on creating strategies of social activism that can be implemented in local and global communities. These series are organized by Marina Cortes and Marina Resende and include the participation of guest speakers Ana Giselle, Gustavo Bonfiglioli, Marina Resende, Cecilia Resende, Carolina Lauriano, QPOC artists and activists living in Brazil that are some of the major figures of the resistance movements.
