Online poetics series

Digital photography

2019-2020

The work is composed of three digitalized images; Computer poetics, Oil on canvas and Lernin Inglis. The tryptic explores linguistics in a digital framework through acts of fragmentation, re-signification, representation, and morphologic and phonetic transcriptive variations. The work plays with Spanish and English languages because of their naturalization to my life as an immigrant; however, Lerning English is morphologically written in such a way that it would sound like English from a Spanish phoneme. The image acts on the one hand as a genuine individual act of confusion and detachment from the English language contrasting the immigrant naturalization rhetoric (no matter how long I live in America, I will never speak English 100% correctly or I will always be seen as an outsider)and on the other hand, it acts as global critique against a lexical imperialism and indoctrination of the English language where broken English emerges as an act of empowerment and resilience. Computer poetics is a fragmented poem in Spanish by words where each word or signifier is paired with a visual image of its signified or in some instances with connotations of said signified. The poem was composed of the images found on the desktop, therefore meaning preceded language. Taking inspiration from concrete poetry and Structuralist linguistics, the poem appropriates desktop labeling structure to create a cohesive chain of representative meaning that contains affect. Oil on Canvas is the resignification of the artistic technique "Oil on canvas" through visual representation. Originally transcribed from the Portuguese "Óleo sobre tela" where tela means both canvas and screen, the computer screen constitutes itself as the actualized and evolved technological canvas contrasted with the rudimentariness of the cooking oil that paradoxically coexists in its useless immaterial form. The three images of the tryptic inquire in the relation between the signified and signifier, visual and lexical representation, meaning (re)signification and phonetical paradigms in a digital framework.
